Tibet - India's Dilemma

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Tibet remains one of those difficult diplomatic and political, and moral challenges for the world. This is even more so, for India.

Since China's defeat of independent Tibetan army in 1949 and the signing of an agreement by the then Tibetan government, the situation has been rife for disagreement and conflict: The government of China recognizes Tibet as autonomous provincial entity of the mainland China but the government of Tibet in Exile seeks independence for Tibet. And there are other disputes which include what constitutes Tibet i.e. the geography of Tibet.

India has always been involved in this dispute. Dalai Lama who is the symbolic head of the Tibet government in exile was welcomed to India in 1950's and since then the Dalai Lama has made Dharma Shala (in India) his home. Of course, the government of China has been very displeased with this arrangement. Furthermore, in China's view Tibet also includes Arunachala Pradesh -- a province in India.

Thus there are many issues of potential dispute between India and China with regard to Tibet. However, over time China and India have let the status quo prevail for the sake of peace. Both countries have been focused on economic growth and development.

However, the forthcoming Olympic games in summer, and Tibet's recent energetic and loud demands and protests all over the world for independence and Dalai Lama's nuanced stance (of both supporting the Olympic games and the aspirations of the Tibetans for independence) in the context of long-standing support of India for Dalai Lama has made it a knotty situation.

Here is the crux of the issue: should India be focused on its immediate national interests based on assessment of geo-political, territorial, economic and security issues? Or should India be an agent for fostering religious and cultural freedom and diversity consistent with its traditions (even if it led to serious consequences to immediate political and economic interests)? The answer to these questions will determine India's response to the current Tibetan turmoil including the relay of Olympic torch in New Delhi later in April.

Are You Financially Prepared For a Natural Disaster?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Natural disasters such as hurricanes can cause devastating damage. Hurricane season recently began on June 1 and runs through November 30. Experts at the NOAA Climate Predication Center are projecting a 65% chance that the Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal this year. AIR Worldwide Corporation, a leading risk modeling company that helps clients manage the financial impact of catastrophes and weather, report that hurricanes and earthquakes have the potential to cause approximately $500 billion of total economic losses. Although it may not be possible to completely protect yourself from the wrath of mother nature, below are some precautions and valuable information that may help you recoup a portion of your loses if you are a victim of a natural disaster.

Consider flood insurance. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), flooding is the number one natural hazard. Many people have the misconception that their homeowners insurance will cover flood damage; however, it does not. In fact, FEMA indicates that only 25 percent of the 10 million homes that lie within high flood risk zones carry flood insurance. In order to obtain flood insurance, you must live in one of the 20,000 communities that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a component of FEMA that handles flood insurance, floodplain management, and flood hazard mapping. For useful information about flood insurance, visit floodsmart , the official web site of NFIP. Use this resource to determine your area's flood risk, estimate your premium, and helpful FAQ's concerning flood insurance.

Prepare your home for a disaster. Depending on which disaster is more likely to strike in your geographical area, take steps to reduce the risk of damage. For example, if you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, install hurricane shutters on your windows. In regions that experience earthquakes, secure objects like bookcases that could easily fall. You may also want to consult a building inspector for suggestions on home repairs that could prepare your home for a disaster. Certain home improvements may also lower your homeowner's insurance premium. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), it is a good idea to make sure you have enough insurance to rebuild your home and replace all of your personal belongings. You may also want to consult your insurance company about Additional Living Expenses (ALE) coverage, which pays for the additional costs of living away from home such as hotel bills and restaurant meals while your house is being repaired or rebuilt.

Fires may affect any home, so installing smoke detectors may be a good idea. The American Red Cross recommends that you contact your local fire department to see if they make free house calls. In some cities, a fireman may visit your home to evaluate your property and make fire safety suggestions.

Plan ahead. Visit ready, the official web site of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), for a printable emergency supply list. In addition to items like prescriptions and non-perishable food, USHS also recommends that you include copies of insurance polices and bank account records in a waterproof container. Although you may be on a budget, you may consider keeping a small amount of cash on hand or a small roll of quarters in case phone lines are down and you have to use the pay phone. For insurance reasons, you may also want to make a list of your valuables. The Insurance Information Institute also recommends consumers visit the site knowyourstuff to download free home inventory software.

Be aware of assistance programs. FEMA offers many assistance programs to those affected by disasters. Visit fema.gov and click on the "Apply for Assistance" link to familiarize yourself with the procedures. Depending on the type of emergency situation, you may qualify for a number of their programs including Disaster Legal Services, Disaster Unemployment Assistance Program, and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Your local branch of the American Red Cross may also provide you with basic needs such as food and clothing immediately following a disaster. Visit redcross for more information.

What's Happening In Our World Today?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

My philosophy has always been that it's vitally important that everyone should maintain a positive attitude in everything they do or whatever happens to them in their daily lives.

But it sure seems to get more and more difficult everyday to make it happen. I guess it's it's because I'm very concerned about what's happening in our world today and how it is negatively affecting all our lives. I cannot understand why we have let conditions deteriorate as much as we have.

I get thoroughly disgusted with the ridiculous rise and fall of gas prices (and the flimsy excuses of what's causing it), the political bickering over the Iraqi war, the corruption of top executives in various major corporations, the excessive prescription drug prices, unbelievable medical bills and the total breakdown of our morals. We even need to scrutinize our judicial system too. Judges are granting ridiculous plea bargains and early paroles, and also reducing sentences many times. And then you have prisoners being released by mistake and sex offenders not registering and even roaming the streets and committing the same crime time after time.

Isn't this supposed to be "the greatest country on earth?" I guess it still is in many ways but in many ways it is not. If all these issues we are faced with today are allowed to continue what kind of a world can we expect for our grandchildren and great grandchildren? I am greatly concerned about that.

If you complain about any of these things in conversations with others the usual comment is, "you can't do anything about it". Well I'm not too sure this is true. I use to believe that the best way to solve these problems is become more serious whom you vote for. However I'm not convinced this is the correct answer anymore. It seems that the promises the politicians make during their political campaigns don't always live up to what they preach when they get in office.

So here's what I believe we must do that could make a difference:

(1) Become totally informed about those issues that concern you. Surf the Internet for all kinds of issues you are concerned about. There is revealing and valuable information on the Internet that will amaze and shock you about what's happening in our society.

(2) Look for articles and read books that reveal negative and shocking news that's happening in our government, with the drug and medical industry, insurance companies, oil companies and the entire lobbyist that travel the halls of congress.

(3) Subscribe to various free newsletters on the Internet that deal with these same issues. I'll keep you informed in my free newsletter about any such news I believe you should know about.

(4) Then in your conversations with others spread the word to everyone you possibly can. Don't worry about people who have been brainwashed by sources making life difficult for all of us. There are plenty of other citizens out there concerned and fully disgusted about the alarming news that is destroying our society today.

(5) Lastly if you get really concerned I recommend writing your Congressman or Congresswoman about how you feel. I do not know how much it will help but it's worth a try anyway.

But what ever happens let's not give up the fight. I believe eventually that public opinion will make a positive impact on the guilty ones. We just need to keep up the pressure by constantly spreading the truthful information we find. Let's try it. OK?

How Can We Prevent the Next Big Haiti Earthquake?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

How can we truly prevent earthquake disasters from happening in Haiti again? We know that earthquakes will be coming again in the future. In fact, Port-Au-Prince sits on the exact location of tectonic plate and fault formation under the Earth where seismic activities occur on a regular basis causing catastrophic earthquakes, none as big as January 12, 2010, nonetheless have occurred throughout history--1860, 1770, 1761, 1751, 1684, 1673, and 1618, (United States Geological Survey (USGS)).

Haiti needs proper building codes to withstand the next devastating earthquakes. This is a must, and the international community has to step in to do all it can to assist Haiti in this regard. The international community should see to it that all future buildings in Port-Au-Prince-- the epicenter of earthquakes in Haiti--be built using established building codes that will enable buildings and homes to withstand the powerful shakes of future earthquakes. We as the international community cannot allow such tragedy to happen again in Haiti.

In fact, Former President Clinton was a resident of the Hotel Montana during his last visit to Haiti, and the Hotel Montana was one of the hotels hardest hit by the devastating Haiti earthquake. Many people from other countries have perished in the Hotel Montana. This is to show us that the infrastructure of Haiti is an earthquake hazard to all of us, so all of us in the international community are compelled to come together and help a nation in need, and help it build itself stronger than ever before. Members of the international community have definitely done so.

It didn't take long for our wishes to be granted. In fact, it was granted in a big way. Former president of the United States, William Clinton (Bill Clinton) has teamed up with the International Code Council (ICC), a nonprofit organization that helps build safer homes and buildings that can withstand the shakes of the most powerful earthquakes. The ICC establishes building codes for builders or developers to follow when erecting buildings and homes in the United States and other parts of the world. These building codes are created to help buildings and homes withstand the effects of Earthquakes and other natural disasters. Such building codes will be of utmost importance in the rebuilding efforts of Haiti.

The ICC receives donations through its foundation (ICCF) to subsidize building assignments in places and situations such as Haiti. While it will be quite some time before the recovery tools and resources arrive in Haiti, the International Code Council is nevertheless using its relationships with the United Nations and the efforts being coordinated by former President William Clinton to help rebuild the devastated nation of Haiti and to reduce future destruction, fatalities, injuries, and property damage from earthquakes and other natural disasters that may occur in the future, (ICC).

In greater detail, the International Code Council is a nonprofit, membership organization composed of building code officials from building inspectors to fire suppression officials. A direct list of these officials is as follows: architects, engineers, developers, building owners, and others involved in building safe communities.

The Code Council develops model building codes adopted in all 50 States of the United States. These, building codes are either adapted or used as resources in other countries around the world including nations in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Asia and the Middle East. The group of International building Codes includes specific sections pertaining to natural hazards, which are regularly updated to coordinate with U.S. federal agencies and to reflect current data and field experience, (ICC).

According to the ICC, smart application of proven seismic safety principles to rebuild Port-Au-Prince and other Haitian communities are encouraged. It is common knowledge that damage, fatalities, and injuries from earthquakes can be reduced by adapting proper building code guidelines and enforcing them forcefully, (ICC).

Haiti will be getting the best building code technology to rebuild itself. The nation will be getting building code technology developed from knowledge and data received from earthquakes in earthquake-prone areas of the United States. This technology includes certain design and construction approaches that acknowledge hazards and risks associated with massive earthquakes. Such building codes and guidelines will be enforced by the International Code Council to ensure safe constructions of buildings and houses, (ICC). Builders who employ proper building code guidelines when building in seismically active regions know the value of these codes and the techniques to ensure their effective enforcement, (ICC).

Studies have shown that although it cost more to build earthquake-proof homes, every dollar spent on building safer and stronger homes or buildings, prevents four to seven dollars in future losses, (ICC). The ultimate goal of the ICC is to support the efforts of the U.S. State Department and other federal agencies, along with the United Nations and other international relief organizations, to make sure that Haiti is rebuilt in a manner that creates disaster resilience caused earthquakes, (ICC). According to the International Code Council, the seismic provisions of the International Codes are regularly updated to reflect the latest knowledge about earthquake dynamics and building behavior, and can function as an important tool in the Haiti earthquake disaster relief efforts. The Code Council will be providing written materials, subject-matter expertise, and professional development to ensure that Haiti is rebuilt for the long haul, (ICC). The events in Haiti once again show us that any rebuilding efforts should involve construction that utilizes the best available information and technology on building codes and building code enforcement guidelines, (ICC).

The ICC implied that earthquake events of similar magnitude have different impacts based on how prepared a nation and community is in managing the built environment-high rise buildings in cities and private homes. The more prepared the least the casualties, and the least prepared, the more the casualties-Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. In Haiti's case it was not prepared because its government and people did not have the financial resources needed to become prepared. The International Code Council's building codes for Haiti are therefore intended to protect people inside buildings when future earthquakes struck again by preventing the easy collapse of buildings and houses to allow for safe evacuations. It was because buildings collapsed so easily why so many people lost their lives in Haiti. Structures built following the most modern building codes should resist minor earthquakes without suffering damage by riding out severe earthquakes without collapsing according to the ICC. Structures in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti did not follow any modern building codes that would have helped buildings or houses resist the tremors of the massive earthquake of January 12, 2010. China's 7.9-magnitude earthquake was devastating, but with less casualties than Haiti's 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

The ICC and the international community are pouring out their hearts with support and prayers to the people of Haiti. Never in history as there been so much international support for a nation and people in such distress. It is wonderful to see the overall international support for the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the most devastated ever, in this region of the world.

The Haiti earthquake of January 12, 2010 was devastating, but history tells us that there could be more big ones in years to come. Port-Au-Prince sits exactly in the epicenter or hotspot of earthquake activities in Haiti. So, there will be more earthquakes coming in the future, big or small; they will be coming. Therefore, now is the time for the country of Haiti to go into preparation mode, so when the next one comes, the country's building infrastructure will be able to withstand the tremors or shakes of the largest of them all, and therefore give its citizens the precious moments they will need to escape before their buildings or homes fall and crush them. Haiti cannot make this happened without help from the international community. So, by President Clinton and the ICC stepping in to lend a helping hand to Haiti's rebuilding efforts, we can be assured that the people of Haiti will be fully prepared for the next massive earthquake whenever it comes.

If anyone would like to donate on behalf of the Haiti earthquake rebuilding or relief efforts, please do so by donating to the International Code Council Foundation, the Redcross, Unicef, or other credible sources.

Nigerian Problems: the Cause and Effect

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Nigeria is full of socio-economic and political problems. Surprisingly, the problems in Nigeria are not natural but man-made; the problems in Nigeria are caused by Nigerians for Nigerians.

What are the problems in Nigeria? There are communal clashes, virtually, everyday and in everywhere in Nigeria; town A will wake up in the morning and start battling with town B for a small piece of land on the account that their forefathers that they were not even born before they died told them that the piece of land belongs to them. And before you will know it there would be loss of lives and property.

There is unemployment in Nigeria. Young school leavers are all over the place searching for employment that doesn't even exist. Well, it is so because Nigerians don't go to school to be empowered but to be employed. Nigerians don't go to school to have knowledge but to become gainfully employed at the end of the day.

The health care system is very bad. You may be surprised to hear from a medical doctor that there are no drugs in the hospital. The medical attention given to hospital patients is nothing to write home about not necessarily because the medical personnel are not well trained but because there are inadequate medical equipment to take of the sick people. Consequently, people die of minor health problems in the hospital.

Worst of all, about 70 per cent of Nigerians are living below poverty level. Poverty is the mother of all problems because it has the ability to lead to many other problems such as crime and so on.

Senior Citizens - Vis-a-vis the Indian Society

Image : http://www.flickr.com

India has proclaimed itself as a welfare state and of course it has also introduced social security schemes like 'payment of pension' etc to the retiring government employees which costs the coffers of the states as well as the central government considerably. Some State Governments like Tamil Nadu has also introduced welfare schemes for payment of 'old age pension' and 'widow pension' etc, in the unorganised sector to rescue the aged people from their financial doldrums to some extent. But, these payments are being made selectively only to the people who have no dependants to look after them. But in practice, the party people mostly misappropriate these funds and manage to get them either for their party people or relatives etc and most of the deserving cases, are simply ignored and neglected.

The retired and the aged peoples have been given a separate nomenclature in the Indian Society called 'the Senior Citizens' and the people who are in the age group of post 65 are generally considered as senior citizens. The people who are above 70 are septuagenarians, above 80 are Octogenarians and above 90 are nonagenarians.

When we compare the total strength of the pensioners, with the total strength of the senior citizens in India, it is only a very small percentage and forms only a handful of people. They are converged mostly in the urban areas and the bulk of the aged people who are senior citizens are mostly in the rural and semi-urban areas, who mostly suffer from senility and remain uncared for. However, the Indian Government had been under a long period of hibernation as far as the senior citizens are concerned.

Only in the year,2007,the Government of India had at last realized the urgent need of doing something for the cause of the senior citizens and enacted the Senior Citizens Act, 2007, the first of its kind in India. The act enables the senior citizens to proceed against their dependants who fail to look after them and claim maintenance from them. The act also provides for a stringent provision for imposing a fine of upto Rs 5,000/- and imprisonment of up to six months, to the dependants who fail to take care of those senior citizens. Above all the Act provides for yet another significant provision of canceling the gift by a senior citizen, given to his or her ward or legal heir, in case of his or her failure to look after the senior citizen who gifted away his or her immovable property. Though the Act suggests for the establishment of homes for rehabilitation of the aged, it does not make any monetary provision for them and the homes for the aged are left to the initiatives of the individuals. Despite of its flaws, the act is a step in the right direction.

Senior citizens have also been extended with some other concessions and benefits by the Indian Government. Their income-tax ceiling has been recently enhanced by the Finance Ministry, to Rs 2,25,000/- Indian Railways has offered 50 % concession in ticket fares for senior citizens. The Courts are giving preference to the senior citizens in the disposal of the cases as quickly as possible. But all these concessions are availed only by a negligible percentage of people in the urban areas. Similarly, the Sixth pay commission report recently submitted by Justice Srikrishna has announced some enhanced pension to a section of the senior citizens on attaining the age of 80, 85, 90. 95, and 100, which is in practice available to only a handful of people, among the pensioners.

The Senior citizens living in the rural areas in India does not even know that they are senior citizens and they are all the cursed people on the earth. They suffer from senility, immobility, lacking in confidence, lacking in basic amenities like food, dress and shelter and they are forsaken by their own wards, uncared for , yearn for love and affection and they suffer in silence.

The most serious aspect that remains to be addressed as far as the Senior Citizens in India are concerned is the rank disrespect, discourtesy shown towards them by one and all and simply they are treated and considered as just superfluous elements in the society. But it is an irony that our politicians who are at the helm of affairs, in the government or at the party system whether it be Congress I or BJP or the Communist parties, the decision makers are the senior citizens in the respective parties and the respect they command and enjoy is unquestionable.

Hence, whether it is an organization or a party or a village or an association, there must be a orientation class to the youngsters to change their attitude towards the senior citizens of a country which is known for its culture, heritage and many a flourishing civilizations.
