Nottingham Nightlife The Best In England?

When people think of Nightlife, and the best places in the country go out, they immediately think of the huge cities, London, Manchester etc which do indeed have some great bars and clubs for all tastes. But with these large names and exclusive venues, a premium is placed on the drinks and entry, often making the good nights out too expensive for the average clubber. So where else is there for the nightlife junkie?? Where can some of the best nightlife in the country be found, at affordable prices? I'll tell you where, Nottingham, thats where. Due to its high student population, clubs and bars are cheap and plentiful for all, meaning that almost any clubber will find the right venue for them. From Underground music, such as drum n bass and heavy techno, to cheesy student nights and RnB, its all here. Its not just for students either, the general public are allowed in many of the venues during the week, and almost all at the weekends. Many locals complain about students, but at the end of the day, they are the ones responsible for the lower drinks and entry prices in the city throughout the week.

So what exactly does Nottingham have to offer in the way of Nightlife? Currently it offers some of the biggest and best clubs in the country, with Gatecrasher having recently taken over Media, providing top music and some of the biggest DJs from around the world. Oceana, opened 2 ½ years ago, has become some what of a student favorite. The third in the brand, this club offers clubbers 6 different experiences in one night, with 2 full size clubs, 3 bars, 1 restaurant and a VIP area, its no wonder this has become one of the busiest clubs in the country. The weekends here are always packed playing the best in commercial dance, RnB and some slightly harder music at times to keep all tastes happy. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the always long queues.

For the harder clubber there is Stealth, which offers hard house, techno, trance and Drum n Bass nights every month, with some of the top DJs in their respective fields making regular appearances. Nottingham was one of the pioneering city’s for Drum n Bass as it has grown over the last 10 years, and stealth offers some of the largest nights in the country for this ever popular underground genre. Massive DJs and producers such as Hype, Mampi Swift, Andy C and many more can often be found whipping the dance floor into an adrenaline filled frenzy with some of the very best and biggest tunes around. There are also a number of other clubs around the City, with Ocean being the number 1 student club, playing a variety of big tunes, cheese, RnB and all the classics all week. Mode is another popular venue with a great atmosphere at all times.

Clubbing not really your thing?? Then why not check out the HUGE range of bars around the City. There are bars to suit every taste, from dirt cheap student bars such as Varsity and Templars to the up market sophistication of the Lace Market. One of my personal favourite bars in Nottingham has to be the Pitcher and Piano. This is not the usual bar, as it is set in a renovated church, with impressive architecture on the outside and beautiful interior design, with a raised circular VIP area right in the center of the venue. Drinks aren’t the cheapest here, but its well worth it for the amazing atmosphere and great service.

With all of this in one place, who needs the over inflated prices of the capital?? Nottingham is the place to be!

1Nottingham.co.uk is a new website set up by Paul Smith dedicated to showing people that Nottingham is the place to be. Users can find information on anything in Nottingham from Nightlife to Student housing. The website is always on the look out for reviews from the people that visit the clubs and bars, pictures of special events and business' to advertise.

Territorial Sovereignty

Since time immemorial, the country we now proudly call the Republic of the Philippines has always been an archipelagic territory composed of more than 7,000 islands and geographically divided into Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. In fact, these three (3) geographical divisions are so emphatically represented in our national flag by the three (3) prominent stars around the blazing sun with eight (8) rays.

Mindanao, which has been so aptly labelled as the Land of Promise (presumably because a large portion of it has been, and still remains virgin and undeveloped) is the largest among the three prominent islands in the archipelago. It has been the home of what I would want to qualify as the most unadulterated original plain blood Filipinos, in that, even after a number of invaders have come and go to and out of the other parts of the country, not too many foreigners have been able to vanquish nor supplant the culture and livelihood, nor the way of life, including religious beliefs of the native Mindanaoans.

Nonetheless, for whatever historical or political reasons, it has been made to appear that the large island of Mindanao is developed and cultivated into the present extent of its "promises" not by the native Mindanaoans, but by transients from other localities in the Visayas and Luzon. What appears to be obtaining in the islands today is that majority of its resources, natural and human, belong not to the lumads or natives but by Cebuanos, Ilongos, Warays, Ilocanos, Tagalogs, etc. As a result, the natives who have always kept their Islam faith intact inspite of a number of religious attempts to convert, feel deprived of their ancestral domain. Hence, the continuing struggle to reacquire possession and ownership of the territory by the marginalized Muslims.

The MNLF and the MILF actually have the same primary objective, that of repossession of territory, although thru varying methodologies. One group calls it political autonomy, the other demands an expanded autonomy; another group wants federalism, one favors decentralization while still another ultimately calls for outright separation from the unitary state.

By whatever process or methodology, the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the country is in a critical balance. The national government must assure the general public that the patrimony of the nation must not be unduly disturbed and no portion of the national territory shall be lost to whichever party or group, while at the same time alleviating the plight of some of our brother Muslims who continue to feel underprivileged and deprived. If only then shall always remain the Land of the Morning Sun, Pearl of the Orient Seas, the Philippine Islands, one of the most beautiful places of the world today.

A Truly Multi-Racial Malaysia In The Making?

Changes to the communal based politics in Malaysia are unlikely to transpire anytime soon, at least not within the next decade. A period of weaning is needed for the ruling UMNO Malay elite who are so used to handouts and cronyism as well as their potential for inciting racial riots. It will be very hard to remove privileges entrenched for the Malays in the fields of business, civil services and institution of higher learning. Just like opium, it will take tremendous willpower to remove the addiction without the backlash that comes with undermining UMNO's support base.

New leaders that do not think along racial lines have to emerge from the midst. For this to ever happen, various racial parties that currently formed parts of the ruling coalition have to be transformed. The modus operandi is archaic and only good for achieving independence from Britain but not for current Malaysia. A new system of governance is needed. Hitherto, the constitution could not be easily amended when a corrupt government had the command of a two-third majority in parliament. A new educational policy must be instituted to instil and breed a new generation of Malaysians that do not want to think along racial lines. The leadership realizes that Malaysia cannot afford to be divided especially in this age of globalization and all human resources must be utilized to their full potential regardless of race or religious affiliations.

Can Anwar Ibrahim assume the new leadership role? This man is a politician to the core. It must be remembered that Anwar was instrumental in implementing the New Economic Policy to the hilt. Hopefully, he has come to understand that Malaysia is now a different country. Politics along racial lines is a thing of the past; only good when the country needed to come together to achieve independence from the British. Anwar's words currently indicate that he is more for an administration that is fair and does not condone a discriminatory policy outlined in NEP. We just have to wait for awhile to see whether or not he will do the walk.

Why People Read Less And Less

Polls keep showing that more and more people in today's world read less and less. Some recent polls estimated that about 25% of United States families did not read a book in the last year. I have even seen some studies put the number as high as 80%.

Many factors contribute to the lowering reading rates. I will list some of the most major ones.

Television - Though television may seem simple in comparison to more elaborate technology, it did not even become commercially available until the 1930s. Nowadays, you can find televisions all over the place. Almost every household in the developed world has one or more. Families eat dinner in front of them instead of at a table. Time put towards television has replaced time put towards sports, family games, study, and of course reading. The addictive television appeals to our laziness, sloth, and short-sightedness. Instead of stimulating our mind with books, we choose to rot our minds in front of a television. Ironically, in the long-term, the reader often feels more fulfilled and happy than the TV addict.

Faster-Paced Lifestyle - Our culture now centers around a constantly faster-paced lifestyle. People work longer hours and then rush through their stressful lives, with credit cards, fast-food, and speeding cars. When we do take a break for fun, we look for the impulsive thrills of drugs, alcohol or TV, rather than calmer, longer-running pleasures like reading.

Misplaced Values - We do not value education and intellectuality much anymore. Instead, we value entertainment and athletics. Perhaps it is because technology and development have eliminated a great deal of our need for intelligence. Perhaps we feel secure that our needs have been met and feel that we no longer need to work as a society towards major goals. As a result, we just want to lay back and gossip about Paris Hilton and cheer for our favorite sports team.

Whatever the reasons, most people in our society have given up on reading for the most part. If you don't already, I encourage you to consider reading more. Also, consider slowing your life down, giving up television, and reassessing your values. Consider giving up unhealthy and short-term pleasures like television for long-term pleasures like reading. In 5 years, will you wish you watched more television, or will you wish you read more?

Whatever you do, good luck and have fun!

The Negative Fallout Of Competition

This is the age of competition. I have come to believe that this slogan and its operationalisation might be the reason that we are failing to create a self confident and innovative manpower. Competitions are in the nature of races. Races are possible only on well defined narrow tracks. By forcing our young people to confine themselves to such narrow tracks while running these races, we are shaving off the personalities of many multifaceted individuals.

The judges of the races work hard to define the rules and shapes of the tracks such that the results can be given in a few digits. Qualities outside the track parameters are disregarded. We are looking for cloned individuals, and the premium on being successful in the race tends to produce only limited robots. Those who fall outside the boundaries are sacrificed and damaged badly. Rich and innovative personalities, some with charming quirks, are not wanted.

All this effort on the part of the official measuring and grading systems is aggressively helped and encouraged by the large coaching industry. This industry can succeed only in producing robotic clones, sometimes destroying the diversities of well rounded human beings. You could not coach a Gandhi, Franklin, Einstein or the inventor of the first desktop computer. We seem to have decided that we do not want any mediocre of that category! We only want a tunnel vision industrious variety at this stage in our development!

The sad thing is that we are doing all this with a feeling that we are engaged in a great educational venture. It is possible that a whole generation of beautiful young people is being sacrificed.Only when we learn to teach and evaluate in a manner such that all coaching becomes redundant and superfluous, we would have arrived. There seems to be a conspiracy that we do not move in that direction I wonder who is conspiring?

Did God Make Only Adam and Eve - An Insight Into the Legal Position of Eunuchs

How often do we sit and question our gender or sexual identity? Is it always the same as the biological sex that we are born in? Can it be independent entity, irrespective of our biological sex? Most of us assume, for lack of further information that our overall sexuality that includes our sex, gender, sexual orientation and sexual behavior are all determined at some point through some 'natural' genetic intervention during our birth and there is nothing one can do about it. We are taught to believe in strict binaries of male and female and the separate social roles associated with both. Today when we see a television advertisement, where our hero denies a young pretty woman's courtship, just as he realized that this attractive woman used to be a man. Oh! And everyone chuckles. Well, it's not that funny. Transsexuality as a phenomenon has gained very little visibility or knowledge in our society - precisely why is it so easy for us to distance ourselves and laugh at it. Our society in fact contains one of the most visible transgender cultures in the world - the 'Eunuch' (Hijra) Community. Eunuchs might have an accepted place in Indian society, but it is a place pretty much at the bottom of the social heap - making them not just a sexual but also a highly deprived social minority.

Transgender communities have existed in most parts of the world with their own local identities, customs and rituals. They are called baklas in the Philippines, berdaches among American Indian tribes, serrers in Africa and hijras, jogappas, jogtas, shiv-shaktis and aravanis in South Asia. The hijra community in India, which has a recorded history of more than 4,000 years, was considered to have special powers because of its third-gender status. It was part of a well-established `eunuch culture' in many societies, especially in West Asia, and its members held sanctioned positions in royal courts. Hijras trace their origins to myths in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Rama, while leaving for the forest upon being banished from the kingdom for 14 years, turns around to his followers and asks all the `men and women' to return to the city. Among his followers the hijras alone do not feel bound by this direction and decide to stay with him. Impressed with their devotion, Rama sanctions them the power to confer blessings on people on auspicious occasions like childbirth and marriage, and also at inaugural functions. This set the stage for the custom of badhai in which hijras sing, dance and confer blessings. But today, keeping in mind the pathetic condition of them one can say that this community actually needs the blessings of Lord Rama more than anyone so that at least they can subsist in the society with proper dignity, respect and most of the most important identity.

Hijras (Eunuchs) in India have virtually no safe spaces, not even in their families, where they are protected from prejudice and abuse. The PUCL(K) Report on Human Rights Violations against the Transgender Community has documented the kind of prejudice that hijras face in Bangalore. The report shows that this prejudice is translated into violence, often of a brutal nature, in public spaces, police stations, prisons and even in their homes. The main factor behind the violence is that society is not able to come to terms with the fact that hijras do not conform to the accepted gender divisions. In addition to this, most hijras have a lower middle-class background, which makes them susceptible to harassment by the police. The discrimination based on their class and gender makes the hijra community one of the most disempowered groups in Indian society. The systematic violence that hijras face is reinforced by the institutions such as the family, media and the medical establishments and is given legitimacy by the legal system. The hijras face many sorts of state and societal harassments such as

Harassment by the police in public places
Harassment at home
Police entrapment
Abuse/harassment at police stations
Rape in jails

The roots of contemporary violence against the hijra community can in fact be traced back to the historical form that modern law in colonial India has taken. It took the form of the enactment of the Criminal Tribes Act, 1871 which was an extraordinary legislation that even departed from the principles on which the Indian Penal Code was based. To establish an offence under the India Penal Code, the accusations against the accused has to be proved beyond reasonable doubt in court of law. But certain tribes and communities were perceived to be criminals by birth, with criminality being passed on from generation to generation. It fitted in well with the hierarchical Indian social order, in which some communities were perceived as unclean and polluted from birth. The link between criminality and sexual non-conformity was made more explicit in the 1897 amendment to the Criminal Tribes Act on 1871, which was sub-titled, 'An act for the Registration of Criminal Tribes and Eunuchs'. Under this law, the local government was required to keep a register of the names and residences of all eunuchs who were "reasonably suspected of kidnapping or castrating children or committing offences under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code". Any eunuch so registered could be arrested without warrant and punished with imprisonment of up to two years or with a fine or both. The law also decreed eunuchs as incapable of acting as a guardian, making a gift, drawing up a will or adopting a son.

Regarding Civil law they are also not spared here. The hijra community is deprived of several rights under civil law because Indian law recognizes only two sexes. This means that hijras do not have the rights to vote, marry and own a ration card, a passport or a driving license or claim employment and health benefits. In north and central India, hijras, who have contested and won elections to local and State bodies, are now facing legal challenges. In February 2003, the Madhya Pradesh High Court struck down the election of Kamala Jaan as the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Katni. The court's logic was that since Kamala Jaan was not a woman, she could not contest the seat, which was reserved for women. Lawyer Pratul Shandilya, who is arguing Kamala Jaan's case, said: "I have already filed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court, and the court has also granted leave in the petition." The High Court verdict came despite a direction from the Election Commission (E.C.) in September 1994 that hijras can be registered in the electoral roles either as male or female depending on their statement at the time of enrolment. This direction was given by the E.C. after Shabnam, a hijra candidate from the Sihagpur Assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh, wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner enquiring about which category hijras were classified under.

The law that is used most to threaten the hijra and kothi communities, as well as the homosexual community in India, is Section 377 of the IPC, which criminalizes "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal" even if it is voluntary. In effect, it criminalizes certain kinds of sexual acts that are perceived to be `unnatural'. The law, which has its origin in colonial ideas of morality, in effect presumes that a hijra or a homosexual person is engaging in `carnal intercourse against the order of nature", thus making this entire lot of marginalized communities vulnerable to police harassment and arrest. The Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA) of 1956 (amended in 1986), whose stated objective is to criminalize brothel-keeping, trafficking, pimping and soliciting, in reality targets the visible figure of the sex worker and enables the police to arrest and intimidate the transgender sex-worker population.

According to the two main diagnostic systems used in the Indian medical establishment, transsexualism is defined as a `gender identity disorder'. The doctors usually prescribe a sexual reassignment surgery (SRS), which currently resorts to hormone therapy and surgical reconstruction and may include electrolysis, speech therapy and counseling. Surgical construction could include the removal of male sex organs and the construction of female ones. Since government hospitals and qualified private practitioners do not usually perform SRS, many hijras go to quacks, thus placing themselves at serious risk. Neither the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) nor the Medical Council of India (MCI) has formulated any guidelines to be followed in SRS. The attitude of the medical establishment has only reinforced the low sense of self-worth that many hijras have at various moments in their lives.

With every single thing going against the Eunuchs; a notable amount of awareness has also been seen all over the world. Around the world, countries are beginning to recognize the rights of transgender people. In a landmark judgment (Christine Goodwin vs. the United Kingdom, 2002) the European Court of Human Rights declared that the U.K. government's failure to alter the birth certificates of transsexual people or to allow them to marry in their new gender role was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights. It said that a test of biological factors could no longer be used to deny recognition legally to the change of gender that a transsexual had undergone. In New Zealand, in New Zealand Attorney General vs. the Family Court at Otahuhu (1994), the court upheld the principle that for purposes of marriage, transsexual people should be legally recognized in their re-assigned sex.

OF late the Indian hijra community has begun to mobilize themselves through the formation of a collective. Sangama, an organization working with hijras, kothis and sex workers in Bangalore, has played an important role by helping them organize and fight for their rights. Its services include organizing a drop-in centre for hijras and kothis, conducting a series of public rallies and marches, using legal assistance in case of police harassment, and establishing links with other social movements.

The organizations of the hijra community can be seen as constituting a larger movement of sexual minority groups in India. They are challenging the constitutional validity of Section 377 and are organizing a campaign questioning the government's stand that the law should remain. The discrimination and violence that hijras face show that it is high time that both the government and the human rights movement in the country begin to take this issue with the seriousness it deserves.

Summer Youth Jobs and After School Programs

It seems as though words are thrown around like bird feed nowadays. People are quick to say things but, when the time comes to back it up, they're no where to be found. A perfect example is the quote that seemingly appears to show concern for our youth, " Children Are Our Future." I've heard that phrase so often but, there is absolutely nothing to support it when it comes to certain issues. I say that because, the issues that surround the health and well-being of our children should be on the forefront of issues that need to be addressed and resolved ASAP. Too many children are getting into trouble and, getting hurt after school as a result of having nothing constructive to keep their minds occupied, enhance their creativity and, keep them off the streets. There used to be a time when Summer Youth Jobs were guaranteed without having to add your name to a lottery and, After School Programs were standard.

Many of the violent crimes involving children today probably would not have taken place if there were jobs and after school programs to attend after school. Sure, there are a few places out there but, there are not enough nor, are they in enough neighborhoods. In my opinion, the lottery for Summer Youth Jobs is one of the most asinine ideas ever thought of. These types of jobs and programs should be standard like it used to be. Thereby, giving many children something definite and constructive to do for the summer and, after school. That in turn, would enable them to achieve a sense of self worth, boosts their self - esteem and, let them feel the joy of making an honest dollar. Having jobs and programs for children will not only benefit children but, give parents/guardians piece of mind in knowing where their children are during certain periods of the day.

Who is Responsible for Protecting Kids From Unsafe Toys?

Many parents are up in arms about the recent spate of toy recalls. Dolls, action figures, ride-on toys, even teethers have been recalled. Lead paint, magnets that can detach, chemicals in plastic that are unsafe... It seems like everyday there's a new recall.

Outside of returning the toys and getting a refund, what can a parent do? Who is responsible for toy safety? Is it enough to buy toys from reputable merchants? Or is there more that parents can do to be sure that their kids aren't victims of unsafe toys?

Ultimately, of course, we as parents are responsible for keeping our kids safe. It's not realistic to think that every toy can be tested for safety, or that every so-called safe toy is safe for every child.

It's so important to make sure that toys are age-appropriate and right for the developmental level of our children. It's our duty as parents to make our decisions about toy buying based on what we feel is right for our child, not what it says on the box or what someone else thinks is appropriate.

So it would seem that keeping kids safe is a shared responsibility between manufacturers, parents and government agencies designed to protect consumers. Manufacturers need to produce safe toys so that they will retain the trust of parents, who are the biggest buyers of toys. At the same time, parents need to police their children's toys, stay current on the latest safe toy info and check the recalls frequently.

When there is a recall, it's important that parents don't leave it up to their kids to find and dispose of the recalled toy. For one thing, children might not understand the seriousness of lead paint of magnets that can be swallowed by a younger sibling. They might be very attached to the recalled toy and be unwilling to discard it or give it to their parent.

Parents should go through all of the toys in the house every once in awhile, just to make sure that toys haven't broken or developed sharp surfaces or chipped paint. It's easier to keep track of toys if children are encouraged to have a "place for everything" rather than just throwing all their toys into one large bin. Individual baskets for each type of toy make it easy to go through them quickly.

The bottom line is that we're all responsible for toy safety, but the manufacturers bear the biggest burden, because they profit from the toys. They control the factories and the workers and that means that they are the first line of defense against unsafe toys. When there's a recall, parents will blame them, even if they've outsourced the manufacture of the toy. It behooves them to do a better job of protecting children.

Lill Hawkins blogs about resources for finding safe toys for Toddlers to Teens and maintains a recall list at How to Find Safe Toys Check in daily for the latest toy recalls and a long list of alternatives to blah big-box gifts.

California Earthquake: Fog, Lights, and Precursory Warnings

Some say before a big Earthquake in California that all the animals will run away and the weather will change and a still air fog will appear? Some say that lights of white, red or blue might appear? Indeed lights have been seen before Earthquakes and perhaps we could use this by monitoring for such anomalies to warn us of Earthquakes in California, but viewing the Earth by Satellite? Is it possible? Here is some information on this;

http://geology.about.com/od/earthquakes/a/EQlights.htm?nl=1

Have the recent unexplained lights in California and the changes in the weather and wind shift be a precursor to tectonic movements and even God forbid a future Earthquake in California? If these strange anomalies and lights are real and could have something to do with a pending Earthquake event, well shouldn’t we tell some people or is it more fiction and myth than reality and would we only unnecessarily be inciting the masses with media hype and hysteria.

After all with the Elevated Terrorist Alerts people have enough to worry about without the fear of another 1907 San Francisco size Earthquake leveling Los Angeles or San Francisco. Are there indeed warning signs that we are not acknowledging but should be? Have human scientists failed to learn what ancient civilizations once knew? Have we forgotten more than we know about Earthquakes and Predictions? Consider this in 2006
