MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI 2000 AMPUTATIONS & NOW REINFECTIONS (UN MINUSTAH)

MaximsNewsNetwork: 03 February 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The United Nations (UN) said that current estimates of 2000 amputee cases in Haiti as a result of injuries sustained from last months earthquake are likely to rise. And that number could go even higher because patients are having to return for more surgery as a result of reinfection. According to OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), there are currently 150 health facilities operational in Port-au-Prince but only 46 have surgical capacity with limited x-ray equipment. Most of the injuries from the quake were a result of crushed syndrome where infection occurs after being trapped under the rubble for days. But lack of antibiotics and sanitary conditions have Haitians who have had limbs amputated now fighting another battle of recurring infection. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common creating a major concern for doctors. SOUNDBITE (English) Noel Gibner, doctor with Médecins Sans Frontières: "There is huge amount of disability here. Many patients have lost their limbs, many of the wounds are infected at this point in time. There is a lot of surgery required to maintain the wounds and prevent the infections. Its made more difficult by the conditions obviously here and antibiotics are not always available and the right type and that always creates a problem. Moise had his first surgery only one week ago, now he has to have another. SOUNDBITE (Creole) Moise Soisfils ...

KISS and the Search For Novel Fundraising Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For many fundraising teams the battle to come up with ever more novel fundraising ideas is a constant preoccupation. Whatever the club, charity, organisation or good cause many fundraisers are obsessed with coming up with unique fundraisers.

There is something to be said for this approach. A good idea can capture people's imagination, re-invigorate jaded volunteers, attract attention and hopefully bring in the cash.

A clever fundraiser however should never be complicated.

I was reminded of this on reading of the fundraising efforts of a local secondary school in the UK. They wanted to raise money for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake and their approach is a great lesson in following what should be every fundraiser's maxim

KISS which of course stands for Keep It Simple Stupid!

The idea came from the school six formers so they automatically had a team of enthusiastic people who wanted to act.

They didn't simply want to have a collection, and some kind of fun event would, in the circumstances, not be appropriate.

Instead they did a little research into Haiti and came up with the idea of a Solidarity Day.

Taking as their inspiration the colours of the Haitian Flag - Red and Blue the pupils organised a Haitian Solidarity Day. Pupils and teachers paid a £1.00 donation to wear red and blue to school to raise money for the Earthquake Appeal.

It really doesn't come much simpler. But the day was a fantastic success bringing the whole school together to support a cause. In one day they also raised over £2,600.

What a great result and congratulations to all concerned.

Ok the disaster in Haiti was a unique event and different from the sort of fundraising most of us are engaged in on a day to day basis. But we should all take inspiration from what this school achieved quickly, easily and respectfully. Whatever we wish to raise funds for try not to tie yourself up in knots - Keep It Simple Stupid.

Haiti Needs US -ALL

When I first heard the news of the devastating affect of the Earthquake in Haiti ; I literally fell to my knees bawling . The photographs and video really got to me . I couldnt imaging how it must be for those in Haiti . Everyone helping there are heroes. All those who survived and went about and helped find fellow victims of the quaker are my heroes. How the world seemingly can work side by side handing out food and medical care and rescue efforts really touched me. I Hope after viewing this video that you donate to one of the organizations listed . All those listed have very low administration costs. Most of those listed have a 95% to 98.5% that goes directly to help Haiti. Please donate what you can and please pass this link along Light turned to dark Black turned to white dust of concrete on their faces buildings collapse in so many places gaping wounds and broken limbs yet in the street, they sing hymns no clean water not much to eat tonight they sleep out in the street Buildings all around bodies on the ground so many killed and missing sounds of broken pipelines hissing a man carries his child in his arm-screaming to the sky in such a short span of time -so many people die I cant imagine how it feels -for me its pictures for them its real My heart aches and my tears keep coming While survivors there sleep out in the street, the earth still humming Light turned to dark Black turned to white Concrete dust on their faces Missing and dead in so many places . My heart ...
