How a Tarp Helps in a Disaster Like Haiti

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Disasters strike all parts of the world without any warning at all, unless it is a hurricane. Then it is only an educated guess as to where they are going to strike land at. However, an individual that survived a disaster like the recent earthquakes that hit Haiti knows that being in one is no fun. That is when they are going to realize just how much having a little item like a tarp can help out.

One reason that this item can help out is that it can help is to protect what valuables an individual can find from the ground. This is going to be important for some people since the items that they love could be strewn about all over the place, but if they have one of these they can place them on that and protect them from damage from the dirt and grim.

At times an individual could notice these can be used as a gathering point for water. Now this does not mean that the water will be clean, but in a disaster the chances of having the normal water supply intact is going to be limited. So these can help a person gather water in one place and then they can treat the water.

Something else that an individual will find is that these tarps can be used as a shelter as well. When the earthquake wiped out thousands of homes they were left out in the elements with no protection from the sun. However, with these the people were able to set them up as a tent to provide the protection that they needed from the elements that could adversely affect them.

Being able to survive when a disaster strikes can be a great thing to do. However, after a person survives the disaster they are going to run into the problem of having to cope with the aftermath. That is when they will want to learn just how much help a tarp can be in coping with the aftermath that they face when the disaster is over with.

Haiti Earthquake disaster LIVE VIDEO

Haiti devastated by massive earthquake A massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The extent of the devastation is still unclear but there are fears thousands of people may have died. Haiti's worst quake in two centuries hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, UN HQ and other buildings. A "large number" of UN personnel were reported missing by the organisation. Many people have spent the night outside amid fears of more aftershocks. The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected. Describing the earthquake as a "catastrophe", Haiti's envoy to the US said the cost of the damage could run into billions. A number of nations, including the US, UK and Venezuela, are gearing up to send aid. The quake, which struck about 15km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince, was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude. The tremor hit at 1653 (2153 GMT) on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. Phone lines to the country failed shortly afterwards.

Earthquake in Haiti - A Disaster Preparedness Lesson - 7 Tips to Help You

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Once more, we are reminded about the awful effect and cost of human life, livelihoods and resources that are a result of an earthquake. This time in Haiti on January 12th.

Add to those tears the heartbreak of crumbling public and holy buildings full of memories, faith and art. Unfortunately, though, the country will not likely be on a fast track for repair. It's too rural, not magnificent enough, not published in all the art books, not world famous enough -- and there is a lot of damage to deal with during trying economic times.

Of course, the center of damage is now rubble. But, there are many, many homes in the area that were only badly rattled. That's the case, also, in a hurricane, tornado or even a bad storm; a focused area gets the brunt of the impact and the vast outlying areas just get shook up. So, actually, there are huge numbers of people that were not physically at risk, but they may have lost and had damaged many cherished family treasures.

Disaster preparedness for your personal items includes knowing how to protect your genealogy, heirlooms, photographs, letters, old books, art work and important documents. Set priorities and protect, first, your most important items. Here are 7 tips to help you be better prepared:

1. Use an anchor wax to secure items that can fly off shelves and rattle around in display cases. (Home Depot) This is a VERY good tip!

2. Also, put a couple of nickel sized balls of anchor wax behind the frame of a framed item on the wall to keep it from swinging and popping off the wall when things shake. Broken glass from framed items crashed to the floor will be highly hazardous.

3. Keep photos in archival photo albums that are easy to grab and go. Keep them in a book case or storage box that is easy to get to.

4. Keep storage boxes away from water pipes (water heaters too) that could break and flood on your treasured items (causing water and mold damage).

5. Make sure hanging hooks AND wires are strong, oversized and well anchored into the wood. I can't tell you how many paintings and frames I've repaired that fall off the wall onto a corner of a table or through a vase. Or what about that heavy item hanging over your head in bed!!??

6. Photograph treasured keepsakes and copy docs; keep a copy in another location (another city or state!)

7. You may need supplemental insurance for earthquakes. Make sure your homeowner's policy covers your contents. Heirlooms should not require a Fine Arts rider but should fall under your regular home owner's policy. You will still need photos and values for a claim.

Communication Facilities For Disaster Management

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The devastating earthquake which struck in Haiti on January 12th 2010 merely 10 miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince created a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions affecting more than 20 per cent of Haiti's 9 million residents.

Governments worldwide immediately offered their support. The United States and China sent planes full of supplies with other countries and millions of individuals joining to pledge their support and donations during this humanitarian disaster.

Disasters in the form of natural catastrophe, such as earthquakes or hurricanes, or terrorist attacks and accidents can occur at any time and the usual modes of communication might be lost or cease to work in such a crisis. These disasters have a devastating impact on human life, economy and environment.

The response phase following any disaster involves the immediate mobilization of the necessary emergency services and first responders in the disaster area. This is likely to include a first wave of core emergency services, such as the fire service, police, military and ambulance crews who may have their own existing local or tactical form of communications systems and networks. However, effective communication and coordination between these different factions, other aid workers and volunteers is imperative for an effective and comprehensive disaster management system.

Further to this, in such adverse conditions, it is also key that any first response and emergency teams are well trained, self reliant and equipped with the best and most reliable communication tools and hardware. It is almost impossible for a team to plan fully in advance as they may have no way of knowing where exactly they will be going and indeed what existing systems may still be working in the affected region.

There is a necessity to communicate the true scope and scale of the disaster to the outside world. Without the latest forms of communication technology these often desolate, far flung regions would be entirely isolated. Governments and individuals worldwide would be unaware of the severity of any such disaster and unable to muster the huge support and aid relief that reliable, instantaneous and ongoing communication technology can now provide.

Disaster Donations - The Best Ways to Give in Times of Crisis

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In times of crisis, Americans across the country have an immediate reaction of wanting to give and wanting to help. This is a very good thing, and it's one of the things that make this country great. When the Haiti earthquake hit and when the Chilean earthquake followed, people everywhere were organizing drives of various types to get some sort of relief on its way.

Like with many good ideas though, a little polishing can make a good idea great.

Let's look at just a few considerations that can make your donation during a disaster a win / win for everyone involved. Let's look at the best ways for you to G.I.V.E.:

Goods - Donations of clothing and other items are good if done in the right way.

Income - Sharing your cash is the most efficient way to help, but there are things you should know.

Volunteers - Some disasters could use some helping hands on the ground, but others don't.

Expertise - In some cases you can help victims get certain areas of their life back on track.

Goods

This is the most common form of donation, especially when a local catastrophe occurs. If someone's house burns down and the family loses everything, neighbors are usually quick to contribute clothes, household goods, etc. to help the family get back on their feet.

The more local the disaster, the more useful is the donation of goods. However, for large-scale incidents or disasters farther away, the donation of tangible items becomes less of a good idea. This is because physical items require sorting, shipping, storage, distribution, warehousing, etc. So, by the time you send that old pair of jeans half a continent away, they eventually wind up costing more than a brand new pair.

The best way to donate physical goods is through local organizations that are set up to handle them and who will either use them for local disasters or who can sell the goods to raise money to be used in other ways to help. Good examples of places to donate include faith based organizations, Good Will, and the Salvation Army.

Income

When it comes to disaster relief, cash is king. With cash, relief organizations can pinpoint exactly the type and amount of items they need for a particular disaster and purchase accordingly. Money can be used to supply a variety of aid including water, food, and medicine, and is not limited to the items we usually see donated.

One caveat though, is the fact that after any major disaster the scammers come out of the wood work trying to rip off good hearted donors. If you follow a few safety precautions you can be sure your money is getting to the right folks. First, only donate to a recognized charity and one that will use the money for the purpose for which you are donating. The most recognized group is the American Red Cross (and by the way, it's always good to donate blood). To check the legitimacy of others take a look at www.charitywatch.org or www.charitynavigator.org. These sites can tell you who's for real and how each organization will spend your money.

Volunteers

Neighbor helping neighbor is one of our highest civic duties. Nothing beats having an extra set of eyes, hands, or shoulders when it comes time for disaster recovery. Like goods above though, there are certain ways to offer your volunteer services.

First, don't rush to the scene of an active disaster unless you're a part of local emergency management. People who show up at incidents are called "Convergent Volunteers" and if there are too many, they can actually get in the way of the emergency response. This became something of a problem in Haiti because the airport could handle only so much incoming traffic, and local officials could process only so many incoming foreign nationals.

If you're part of an organized group such as CERT, which is a great thing, please wait until your group is activated or called up.

Expertise

The concept of volunteers above conjures up mental images of people making sandbag walls to protect from floods, cleaning up debris, setting up food lines, and other physical services. After a major disaster though, the needs of the victims fall into numerous categories, only a few of which would benefit from physical help.

For example, during any post-event recovery phase, victims will need assistance with insurance, taxes, unemployment issues, government grant applications, and with all phases of dealing with the legalities involved with injured or deceased loved ones. If you deal with any of these things in your professional life, you'll be highly valued as a volunteer.

The same rules apply though. Offer your assistance to local authorities and wait to be called up.

Though we've thrown in several "don'ts" in our short discussion, please don't think that your help is not needed. It is needed, especially in these economic times when simple disasters can hit our friends and neighbors harder than usual and when first responders and emergency management groups are under the same financial issues the rest of us are.

The next thing to do is look at the hundreds of other ways you can protect your family and contribute to your community in times of crisis. Read more of our how-to articles on our "Disaster Prep 101" book site.

Are You Financially Prepared For a Natural Disaster?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Natural disasters such as hurricanes can cause devastating damage. Hurricane season recently began on June 1 and runs through November 30. Experts at the NOAA Climate Predication Center are projecting a 65% chance that the Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal this year. AIR Worldwide Corporation, a leading risk modeling company that helps clients manage the financial impact of catastrophes and weather, report that hurricanes and earthquakes have the potential to cause approximately $500 billion of total economic losses. Although it may not be possible to completely protect yourself from the wrath of mother nature, below are some precautions and valuable information that may help you recoup a portion of your loses if you are a victim of a natural disaster.

Consider flood insurance. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), flooding is the number one natural hazard. Many people have the misconception that their homeowners insurance will cover flood damage; however, it does not. In fact, FEMA indicates that only 25 percent of the 10 million homes that lie within high flood risk zones carry flood insurance. In order to obtain flood insurance, you must live in one of the 20,000 communities that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a component of FEMA that handles flood insurance, floodplain management, and flood hazard mapping. For useful information about flood insurance, visit floodsmart , the official web site of NFIP. Use this resource to determine your area's flood risk, estimate your premium, and helpful FAQ's concerning flood insurance.

Prepare your home for a disaster. Depending on which disaster is more likely to strike in your geographical area, take steps to reduce the risk of damage. For example, if you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, install hurricane shutters on your windows. In regions that experience earthquakes, secure objects like bookcases that could easily fall. You may also want to consult a building inspector for suggestions on home repairs that could prepare your home for a disaster. Certain home improvements may also lower your homeowner's insurance premium. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), it is a good idea to make sure you have enough insurance to rebuild your home and replace all of your personal belongings. You may also want to consult your insurance company about Additional Living Expenses (ALE) coverage, which pays for the additional costs of living away from home such as hotel bills and restaurant meals while your house is being repaired or rebuilt.

Fires may affect any home, so installing smoke detectors may be a good idea. The American Red Cross recommends that you contact your local fire department to see if they make free house calls. In some cities, a fireman may visit your home to evaluate your property and make fire safety suggestions.

Plan ahead. Visit ready, the official web site of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), for a printable emergency supply list. In addition to items like prescriptions and non-perishable food, USHS also recommends that you include copies of insurance polices and bank account records in a waterproof container. Although you may be on a budget, you may consider keeping a small amount of cash on hand or a small roll of quarters in case phone lines are down and you have to use the pay phone. For insurance reasons, you may also want to make a list of your valuables. The Insurance Information Institute also recommends consumers visit the site knowyourstuff to download free home inventory software.

Be aware of assistance programs. FEMA offers many assistance programs to those affected by disasters. Visit fema.gov and click on the "Apply for Assistance" link to familiarize yourself with the procedures. Depending on the type of emergency situation, you may qualify for a number of their programs including Disaster Legal Services, Disaster Unemployment Assistance Program, and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Your local branch of the American Red Cross may also provide you with basic needs such as food and clothing immediately following a disaster. Visit redcross for more information.
